San Antonio’s Los Thunderbirds formed several years ago after a jam session and features seasoned musicians from a variety of backgrounds. Their style is firmly rooted in Conjunto, but because of their varied experience, the group weaves in other genres like country, jazz and old school rock and roll.

Guitarist and sax player Abel Hernandez comesfrom an Orquesta background and lends his strong lead vocals to each selection, often harmonizing with hardcore Conjunto-rooted drummer Joe Zimmerle. Zimmerle keeps the rhythm along with veteran bass player Jacob Cruz while accordionist Ray Flippo squeezes out the melody on each song.

Los Thunderbirds released their debut album, Watch Out, in early 2016, featuring a number of original songs written by Hernandez, along with the rest of the band. Of those, the two-stepping country tune “Old Hwy 90,” has become a fan favorite and has earned them air play on variety of different radio stations.
