Dan Margolies writes on sustainability theory and conjunto music, Mexican migrant music in the U.S. southeast, and on American foreign relation. He has written two books written numerous articles on a variety of subjects in ethnomusicology, folklore, American studies, and history and is currently working on three projects in Texas music: a co-authored book with Texas Folklife Executive Director Cristina Ballí titled Conjunto Music: Sustaining a Texas Tradition, an edited as-told-to memoir of conjunto accordion legend Santiago Jimenez, Jr. titled El Chief de San Antonio and an edited volume with Susan Morehead titled Texas Folklife: Celebrating 30 Years of Texas Culture, Art, and Music.
